Happy Father’s Day! To all the men out there who have strived to be the best example and role model for us (whether or not you are our biological fathers), thank you!

Here are some fun facts about your special day:

Origin of Father’s Day

In the USA, the first recorded celebration for Father’s Day was held on July 5th 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. There were no sales, no parade, but a simple church service at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, which is now known as the Central United Methodist Church.

Date of Father’s Day

While Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of each June in the United States as well as many other countries around the world, there are some countries that have set Father’s Day on other dates.  For example, in Taiwan, Father’s Day is celebrated on June 8th.  Allegedly, the reason for this is because the word eight in Chinese is “ba”, which is the same sound as the Chinese word for father.

Father’s Day Gifts

Here in America, when we think of Father’s Day gifts, some of the more common items may be things like a bbq, a new tie, tools, tickets to a sports game, electronic devices, etc. However, in Japan, some of the common gifts may be sake (a type of Japanese alcoholic beverage made by fermentation of rice), shochu (a type of Japanese distilled alcoholic beverage commonly made from rice, buckwheat, barley, sweet potatoes, or brown sugar), fashion items, some kinds of gourmet food, sports equipment and various sweets.

Father’s Day Activities

In Germany, some regions have the tradition of going hiking with one or more smaller wagons, called Bollerwagen, that are pulled by manpower.  In the wagons, there are usually beer, wine and other food items (including ham!)

Well, however you like to celebrate Father’s Day, the most important thing is that you are celebrating the men who have made a lasting impact in your life.

If you find yourself struggling to have more presence in your child’s life, it may not be too late to fight for your right to do so.  An experienced family law attorney can be extremely helpful in your pursuit.

Thank you fathers for all that you have done, and all the sacrifices you have made for us.

And to my own father, I love you and thank you.
