What's fun for the kids under the sun (on a budget)?

Summer is here! There are just so many choices! But how do you let the kids have fun and still stay within your budget? Here are some ideas that are great for keeping the kids engaged!

  • Check out your local community recreation centers.  They often have a large variety of classes and clubs for kids that are modestly priced.  The centers usually also have other facilities for those who are not taking classes.  So, while the kids are in classes, you can squeeze in a work out at the gym, or a swim at the pool.  Some may even provide child care for the tiny ones so you can all enjoy a good time!

  • Check out your local parents group.  Sometimes they are on Facebook or Instagram, or it may be an email listserv. They may be parents from the local areas, or a nearby church.  There are many local groups that may have get-togethers so that your child can meet new friends and you can mingle with other parents.

  • Online education games.  What’s better than to fit in fun and learning? How about doing it for free? Prodigygame.com is free to join and play.  It is a RPG style game focusing on math skills that allows you to set and track your child’s progress and level of difficulty.  You can also send rewards to your child after he or she achieves the goal you set! If you want to reward them further, you can also purchase costume and accessories upgrades for your child. You can also check out Dreamscape.com for reading games similar to Prodigy. You can assign reading passages to your child to track the progress. It is also free to use and sign up, with options to purchase upgrades.

  • Groupon.com and other similar websites.  Sometimes you just don’t want to pay full price! There are many vendors and businesses that offer discounts that you can purchase. If you spend some time, you may be able to put together a budget-friendly program that suits both your family and your budget!

  • Set a schedule with the kids! Kids often have wonderful ideas that can take the thinking off of you! Sit down as a family to talk about what they would like to do.  Come up with activity plans and daily schedules that include learning, playing, and helping out around the house.  You can even put in reward programs for them as a motivation.  Once you agree on a plan, print it out and post it on the fridge or a place that everyone can see! If the children take an active part in the planning, they may be more motivated to carry through.  You may even build a new habit or schedule that can carry into the school year!

Summer is a great time to try new things and relax! Make the most out of it!
