If you are in a low-income situation, you may be eligible to get help from legal aid services. These institutions often take cases on a pro-bono or discounted basis. However, they may not be able to cover all the areas of law. Since this is a family law blog, let’s focus only on those that can assist with family law issues. Below are some legal aids that may be serving your area:
Legal Aid of Northwest Texas - this legal aid serves the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area and other areas in Northwest Texas.
Texas RioGrande Legal Aid - this legal aid serves the Austin/San Antonio area, El Paso area, and other areas of South Texas.
Lone Star Legal Aid - this legal aid serves the Houston area and other areas of East Texas.
So, what if you called and found out that you do not qualify for legal aid? The good news is that there are still other resources available.
The Referral Directory for Low-Income Texans is a directory of legal service providers that may offer assistance to those with low-income, but may not otherwise qualify for legal aid.
The State Bar of Texas also offers a Lawyer Referral & Information Service that may be able to connect you to attorneys in your area for a fee of $20 for a 30 minutes consultation. However, this does not guarantee discounts or pro-bono representation by the attorney. You can check out their website for more information.
Even if you find that none of these resources are helpful to you, or you prefer to work with an attorney outside of these channels, you may still be able to work with an attorney on a sliding scale or on a limited scope basis. Ask around. You won’t know until you’ve tried.
